The Corinthian Yacht Club Midwinters 2024
The Corinthian Yacht Club recently hosted its prestigious Midwinter Regatta over four adrenaline-pumped days, on January 20-21, and February 17-18, 2024. As one of the most highly anticipated events on the winter sailing calendar, the Regatta attracted a host of skilled sailors and spectacular vessels, including a noteworthy contingent from the Express 37 class.
The Express 37 Fleet
The Express 37 line-up was a roll-call of eminent participants, with each boat helmed by an experienced and accomplished skipper. Snowy Owl, skippered by Jens Jensen, tangled with Spindrift V under the leadership of Andy Schwenk for first place. The Golden Moon, skippered by Mike Laporte, and Bullet, skippered by Larry Baskin, completed the impressive roster.
January Races: Snowy Owl Soars
The initial two days of the regatta saw Snowy Owl sail to glory, garnering two decisive victories. Jensen’s leadership and the crew’s outstanding performance set a high bar for the competition. Simultaneously, both Spindrift V and Bullet demonstrated commendable performances, each securing a second and third place during these days. The competition was fierce, with all participating teams demonstrating exceptional skill and tenacity.
February Races: Spindrift V Steals the Show
On February 17 and 18, the tide turned in favor of Spindrift V, which took the prized first place on both days. Bullet achieved one second and one third place (dnc), while Golden Moon also secured one second and one third position. Snowy Owl was dnc in both races.
Challenging Weather Conditions
The races on the 17th and 18th were particularly challenging, thanks to high and shifting winds that came and went throughout the day as fronts passed through. The sailors had to navigate through winds regularly in the mid to high 20s, with gusts reported above 40 knots. The conditions tested the mettle of the sailors and their vessels but also made for a thrilling spectacle for spectators.
A Regatta to Remember
The 2024 Midwinter Regatta was a testament to the Corinthian Yacht Club’s tradition of hosting outstanding sailing events. Despite the challenging conditions, the participating teams exhibited great skill and sportsmanship, making for a memorable competition. The Regatta served as a vivid reminder of the beauty and unpredictability of sailing, where everything can change at the drop of a hat and at the whim of Poseidon!
